Decimal fractions
Decimal fractions in Russian are formed using the words целая (whole) and feminine ordinal numbers like десятая (tenth) or сотая (hundredth). Crucially, the noun following a decimal is almost always in the Genitive Singular, with exceptions for plural-only nouns.
How It Works
In Russian, decimal fractions are treated as feminine constructions because they refer to an implied feminine noun like часть (part), as in целая часть (whole part) and десятая часть (tenth part). A crucial orthographic rule is that Russian uses a comma (запятая) as the decimal separator, not a point.
1. The Integer Part:
- Use одна целая if the integer ends in 1 (except 11).
- Use две целых, пять целых, etc., for all other numbers. Note that the number 2 must be in the feminine form две (not два) to agree with the implied feminine noun. Ноль (zero) also takes the Genitive Plural: ноль целых.
2. The Fractional Part:
The fractional part uses feminine ordinal numerals (десятая, сотая, тысячная). The agreement depends on the last digit of the numerator:
- If the numerator ends in 1 (except 11), use the singular: одна сотая, двадцать одна тысячная.
- For all other numbers, use the plural: две десятых, пять сотых, одиннадцать тысячных.
- The conjunction 'и': Standard Russian reads decimals without the conjunction и (e.g., одна целая пять десятых). The conjunction и is standardly used for mixed fractions to distinguish them from decimals.
- Leading zeros: Read the entire number after the comma, specifying the place value based on the total number of digits. For example, 0,05 is ноль целых пять сотых.
3. Noun Agreement (The Golden Rule):
Unlike integers, where the noun case changes based on the number (e.g., 5 + Genitive Plural), a decimal fraction almost always requires the Genitive Singular of the noun. This is because the noun is governed by the fractional part (e.g., 'tenth part of a meter'), not the integer. For example: 21 meters = двадцать один метр (Nominative), BUT 21,5 meters = двадцать одна целая пять десятых метра (Genitive Singular).
Exceptions: Use the Genitive Plural for plural-only nouns (e.g., 1,5 суток) or when referring to a fraction of a plural group (e.g., 0,5 всех студентов).
4. Declension in Oblique Cases:
When a decimal fraction declines, the integer and numerator decline as cardinal numbers, while целая/целых and the denominator decline as adjectives. In oblique cases, целых aligns with the case of the number as a plural adjective (e.g., Dative: двум целым, нулю целым). Golden Rule Corollary: The noun remains in the Genitive Singular even when the fraction declines. For example, with 5,2 meters = с пятью целыми двумя десятыми метра (Instrumental fraction + Genitive Singular noun).
5. Formal vs. Informal:
In formal contexts, the full words целых and десятых are used. In casual speech and technical contexts, Russians often read the comma literally as запятая (e.g., 0,5 is ноль запятая пять, and 3,14 is три запятая четырнадцать). Alternatively, they may use и (and) or simply pause: тридцать шесть и шесть (36,6). When dropping целых and the fractional word, the numbers 1 and 2 revert to matching the gender of the noun being counted (e.g., 2,2 kilograms = два и два килограмма, not две и две). Additionally, decimals ending in ,5 are almost exclusively read with с половиной in casual speech (e.g., 2,5 hours = два с половиной часа).
Examples (4)
- Одна целая пять десятых (1,5) килограмма сахара.
1.5 kilograms of sugar.
Word by Word: One whole five tenths (1,5) of-kilogram of-sugar.
Note that 'одна' is feminine to agree with 'целая', and 'килограмма' is in the genitive singular. In writing, Russian uses a comma (1,5) as the decimal separator.
- Температура воды — двадцать две целых четыре сотых (22,04) градуса.
The water temperature is 22.04 degrees.
Word by Word: Temperature of-water [is] twenty two wholes four hundredths (22,04) of-degree.
Even though the integer is 22, we use 'две' (feminine) to agree with 'целых'. The noun 'градуса' remains genitive singular regardless of the number.
- Площадь комнаты составляет сорок одну целую две десятых (41,2) квадратного метра.
The room area is 41.2 square meters.
Word by Word: Area of-room constitutes forty one whole two tenths (41,2) of-square meter.
In the accusative case (after 'составляет'), the entire fraction declines: 'сорок одну целую'. The noun 'метра' stays in the genitive singular.
- Ноль целых семь десятых (0,7) процента.
0.7 percent.
Word by Word: Zero wholes seven tenths (0,7) of-percent.
Zero (ноль) always takes the plural form 'целых'. The fractional part 'десятых' is also plural because the numerator (7) is not 1.
Common Mistakes
Using the Genitive Plural for the noun in standard decimal measurements.
две целых пять десятых метровдве целых пять десятых метраLearners often think that because 2.5 is 'more than 1', they should use the plural. However, decimals almost always govern the Genitive Singular, unless the noun is plural-only (like сутки) or refers to a specific plural group.
Using masculine forms for 'one' or 'two' in the formal integer part.
один целая пять десятыходна целая пять десятыхThe word 'целая' is feminine, so 'one' and 'two' must agree with its feminine gender in formal speech.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn decimal fractions, a learner must understand how ordinal numbers function as adjectives, how numerals 2-4 govern the genitive case, and how adjectives agree with nouns in gender and number, as these components form the structure of the fractional expression.
- Ordinal numerals as adjectives
Decimal fractions in Russian use fractional ordinal nouns (like десятая, сотая) which function grammatically as adjectives.
Level 2 - два/три/четыре + Genitive SingularNumerals Two to Four with Genitive Singular
The whole number part of the decimal (целая/целых) follows the rules of numeral agreement, where 2, 3, and 4 require the genitive singular form 'целых'.

Related Patterns
- Fractions
Decimal fractions are a specific type of fractional numeral; simple fractions (like 1/2) follow similar feminine agreement rules.
Level 4 - пять и больше + Genitive PluralNumerals Five and Higher
This pattern contrasts with decimals; while whole numbers 5+ take the genitive plural, decimals always take the genitive singular.
Level 3 - полтора/полторыПолтора and Полторы
The word 'полтора' is a shorthand for 1.5, but it follows its own unique declension rules separate from standard decimal fractions.
Level 4 - процент + GenitivePercent Expressions with Genitive Dependents
Percentages are frequently expressed using decimal fractions and follow the same genitive singular noun agreement.
