fără să
Without Doing
Use fără să to describe an action that didn't happen while another was occurring. It is the standard way to say 'without -ing' in Romanian.
How It Works
Fără să means 'without doing something': A plecat fără să spună nimic (He/she left without saying anything).
Subjunctive: Use the subjunctive form after să, such as spună, not indicative spune.
Subjects: They may differ: A plecat fără să știm (He/she left without us knowing). If an explicit subject comes before să, use fără ca noi să știm. The different subject itself does not make ca obligatory.
Negative words: Fără supplies the negative setting, so nimic can appear without verbal nu: fără să spună nimic. Do not mechanically add nu; it can negate the embedded action and change the meaning.
Earlier action: Fără să fi spus nimic means 'without having said anything'. It places the absent action earlier; it does not assert that the action happened.
Clitics: fără să-l vadă, fără să o vadă, or contracted fără s-o vadă.
Examples (6)
- A plecat fără să spună nimic.
He left without saying anything.
Word by Word: He left without that he says nothing.
Notice how 'saying' becomes 'să spună' (subjunctive third person).
- Nu poți reuși fără să muncești.
You cannot succeed without working.
Word by Word: Not you can succeed without that you work.
The verb 'muncești' agrees with the subject 'tu' (you).
- A plecat fără ca noi să știm.
He left without us knowing.
Word by Word: He left without that we know.
When the subject changes (from 'he' to 'us'), the phrase 'fără ca... să' is required.
- Mănâncă fără să se uite la televizor.
He eats without watching TV.
Word by Word: He eats without that himself he looks at television.
The reflexive pronoun 'se' is placed between 'să' and the verb 'uite'.
- A trecut pe lângă mine fără să mă vadă.
He passed by me without seeing me.
Word by Word: He passed by me without that me he sees.
The direct object clitic 'mă' (me) is placed correctly after 'să'.
- A plecat fără să fi spus un cuvânt.
He left without having said a word.
Word by Word: He left without that be said a word.
This uses the perfect subjunctive to refer to a completed action.
Common Mistakes
Using the indicative mood instead of the subjunctive.
A plecat fără să spune nimic.A plecat fără să spună nimic. In the third person, the subjunctive 'spună' is different from the indicative 'spune'. Always use the subjunctive form after 'să'.
Incorrectly contracting 'să' with the masculine clitic 'îl'.
A plecat fără s-l vadă.A plecat fără să-l vadă.While 'să' contracts with 'o' (s-o), it does not contract to 's-' before 'îl'. Instead, use a hyphen: 'să-l'.
Placing a subject before să without ca.
A plecat fără noi să știm.A plecat fără ca noi să știm. When the explicit subject noi is placed before să, use fără ca noi să știm. You can also say fără să știm with an understood different subject, or fără să știm noi.
