Romanian Nominalization
Romanian uses specific suffixes to create abstract nouns representing actions, processes, or qualities. These are essential for formal, technical, and academic communication.
How It Works
Romanian nominalization is a productive process that allows for the creation of complex abstract concepts. The most common suffixes include:
- -are / -ere / -ire / -âre: These are derived from the long infinitive. -are attaches to 1st conjugation verbs (a lucra → lucrare), -ere to 2nd and 3rd conjugation verbs (a vedea → vedere; a face → facere), -ire to 4th conjugation verbs in -i (a citi → citire), and -âre to 4th conjugation verbs in -î (a hotărî → hotărâre). These are feminine nouns.
- -ție: An ending found in many learned words, often borrowed from Latin or French, naming abstract concepts, technical processes, or administrative terms (a opera → operație; situație, tradiție). These are feminine.
- -ment: Often denotes the result or instrument of an action (a angaja → angajament). Unlike the others, these are neuter nouns.
- -itate: Used to turn adjectives into abstract qualities (clar → claritate). These are feminine.
- -eală / -ime: Productive suffixes for forming abstract or collective nouns from verbs and adjectives, such as greșeală (mistake) or mulțime (multitude/crowd).
When these suffixes are added, the stress typically shifts to the suffix itself. For example, lucrare stresses the syllable -cra-; the present “he works” is lucrează. Check stress with the actual word. These nouns follow ordinary adjective agreement and definiteness rules. They can take an attached definite article when the meaning calls for it, as in dezvoltarea.
Examples (6)
- Dezvoltarea economică este o prioritate.
Economic development is a priority.
Word by Word: Development-the economic is a priority.
Here, 'dezvoltarea' is the nominalized form of the verb 'a dezvolta' (to develop) using the -are suffix.
- Am semnat un angajament pe termen lung.
I signed a long-term commitment.
Word by Word: I-have signed a commitment on term long.
Angajament is a neuter noun related in meaning to angaja. Recognizing the ending helps with its plural angajamente; this is not a rule for freely creating nouns from every verb.
- Claritatea explicației a fost impresionantă.
The clarity of the explanation was impressive.
Word by Word: Clarity-the explanation-of-the was impressive.
This shows two nominalizations: claritate (related to clar) and explicație (related to a explica). These word families help recognition; their historical derivation is not always a suffixation inside Romanian.
- Această hotărâre a fost luată rapid.
This decision was made quickly.
Word by Word: This decision has been taken quickly.
'Hotărâre' is the nominalized form of the verb 'a hotărî' (to decide), illustrating the -âre suffix. Note that 'î' changes to 'â' inside the word per modern spelling rules.
- Facerea de bine nu este întotdeauna ușoară.
Doing good is not always easy.
Word by Word: Doing-the of good not is always easy.
'Facerea' comes from 'a face' (to do/make), demonstrating the -ere suffix used for 3rd conjugation verbs.
- O mulțime de oameni au observat acea greșeală.
A crowd of people noticed that mistake.
Word by Word: A multitude of people have noticed that mistake.
This example uses '-ime' (mulțime, from 'mult') and '-eală' (greșeală, from 'a greși') to form abstract or collective nouns.
Common Mistakes
Using masculine plural agreement with a neuter noun.
Acești angajamente sunt buni.Aceste angajamente sunt bune.Angajament is neuter: masculine-type agreement in the singular, feminine-type agreement in the plural.
Failing feminine agreement with an action noun.
Citirea e greu.Citirea e grea.Citirea is feminine, so the predicative adjective is grea. Cititul e greu is another grammatical sentence, with a different action noun.
Using an invented plural ending.
Avem multe informațieuri.Avem multe informații.The plural of informație is informații. Learn the actual plural instead of adding -uri to every noun.
