Middle se

Middle Constructions

Level 6

The Middle se construction describes how an action happens to a subject based on its own qualities (e.g., 'This car drives well'). It requires the reflexive clitic se and usually a qualifying adverb like ușor (easily) or greu (hard).

How It Works

The Middle construction (often called the 'property middle') is a high-level feature of Romanian syntax. It is formed using the 3rd person reflexive pronoun se and a transitive verb in the active voice.

Key Characteristics:

  • Agreement: The verb must agree in number with the subject (e.g., Cartea se citește vs. Cărțile se citesc).
  • Adverbial Requirement: This construction almost always requires an adverb (like bine, ușor, greu) to define the property. Without the adverb, it often reverts to a standard passive se.
  • Tense Restriction: Property middles commonly use the present tense to describe a general property. Other tenses are possible when the property is situated in another period: Cartea se citea greu (The book was hard to read).
  • Generic Agent: While no specific person is mentioned, the agent is understood to be generic (people in general).
  • Stative Meaning: It does not describe an action in progress, but a general property in the relevant context; that property need not be permanent. Mașina se conduce ușor means the car is 'easy-to-drive' by nature.

Distinction from other 'se' types:
While it looks like the anticausative se (spontaneous change) or the impersonal se (general 'one'), the Middle construction is unique because it implies a potential agent but focuses entirely on the object's 'readiness' or 'suitability' for the action.

Examples (5)

  1. Această mașină se conduce foarte ușor.

    This car drives very easily.

Word by Word: This car itself drives very easily.

Here, 'se conduce' describes the handling property of the car, not a specific person driving it right now.

  2. Poezia lui Eminescu se traduce greu în alte limbi.

Eminescu's poetry translates with difficulty into other languages.

Word by Word: The poetry of Eminescu itself translates hard in other languages.

The adverb 'greu' (hard/with difficulty) is essential here to characterize the complexity of the text.

  3. Apartamentele mici se vând repede în acest oraș.

Small apartments sell quickly in this city.

Word by Word: The apartments small themselves sell quickly in this city.

Note the plural agreement: 'apartamentele' (subject) matches 'se vând' (plural verb).

  4. Materialul acesta se curăță ușor.

    This material cleans easily.

Word by Word: Material-the this itself cleans easily.

The sentence describes how easy the material is to clean, rather than instructing someone to perform a particular washing procedure.

  5. Pâinea proaspătă se taie bine cu acest cuțit.

Fresh bread cuts well with this knife.

Word by Word: The bread fresh itself cuts well with this knife.

This focuses on the 'cuttable' quality of the bread when using a specific tool.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting verb agreement with a plural subject.

    Cărțile se citește ușor.
    Cărțile se citesc ușor.

Even though 'se' can feel impersonal, the verb must agree with the plural subject 'cărțile' (the books).

  • Omitting the 'se' clitic (literal translation from English).

    Cartea vinde bine.
    Cartea se vinde bine.

In English, we can say 'The book sells well,' but in Romanian, the reflexive 'se' is mandatory to indicate the middle voice.
