Clitics With Commands

Level 4

Affirmative: Verb-Pronoun (e.g., Dă-mi!)
Negative: Nu-Pronoun-Verb (e.g., Nu-mi da!)

How It Works

In Romanian, the placement of clitics in the imperative mood is a strict syntactic rule:

  • Affirmative Commands: The clitic follows the verb and is attached with a hyphen (e.g., Ajută-mă!). If there are two clitics, the order is Dative + Accusative. Note that dative clitics undergo specific shifts in clusters: îmi becomes mi-, îți becomes ți-, îi becomes i-, and le becomes li- (e.g., Dă-li-le! - Give them to them!).
  • Negative Commands: The clitic moves before the verb, leaning on the negator nu. The verb form depends on the number: the singular uses the short infinitive (e.g., Nu mă ajuta!), while the plural uses the 2nd person plural form (e.g., Nu mă ajutați!).

This 'flip' is mandatory. Some forms also occur in statements with different placement: Ajută-mă! is a command, while Mă ajută is a statement. Moving a clitic does not automatically turn every imperative form into a valid indicative.

Hyphenation Rules:
In affirmative commands, the hyphen is always used for phonological fusion. In negative commands, a hyphen is required if the pronoun merges with the negator nu (e.g., Nu-i spune!) or to separate clitics within a cluster (e.g., Nu mi-l da!).

Examples (6)

  1. Spune-mi adevărul!

    Tell me the truth!

    Word by Word: Tell-me truth-the!

In this affirmative command, the dative clitic '-mi' (to me) is attached to the end of the verb 'spune'.

  2. Nu-mi spune minciuni!

    Don't tell me lies!

Word by Word: Not-me tell lies!

In the negative command, the clitic '-mi' moves before the verb and attaches to 'nu'.

  3. Dă-li-le înapoi!

    Give them back to them!

    Word by Word: Give-them(dat)-them(acc) back!

When combining clitics, the dative 'le' changes to 'li-' before the accusative 'le'. Both follow the affirmative verb.

  4. Nu le-o da!

    Don't give it to them!

Word by Word: Not them-it give!

In the negative singular command, we use the short infinitive 'da' and place the clitics before the verb.

  5. Uitați-vă la mine!

    Look at me! (plural/polite)

Word by Word: Look-yourselves at me!

For plural affirmative commands, the reflexive clitic 'vă' follows the verb.

  6. Nu vă uitați la el!

    Don't look at him! (plural/polite)

Word by Word: Not yourselves look at him!

In this negative plural command, uitați has the same form as the second-person plural present, and vă precedes it.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping the pronoun after the verb in a negative command.

    Nu spune-mi!
    Nu-mi spune!

In negative commands, the pronoun must always precede the verb.

  • Using the wrong verb form for negative singular commands.

    Nu fă-l!
    Nu-l face!

Negative singular commands use the short infinitive (face), not the affirmative imperative stem (fă). The clitic also moves to the front.

Learn This First

To learn clitic placement with commands, you first need to be comfortable with the forms of direct and indirect object clitics. You also need to know how to form basic affirmative and negative imperatives, as the clitic's position depends entirely on whether the command is positive (clitic follows) or negative (clitic precedes).
