Where Conditional By Goes
In Polish, the conditional mood is formed using the particle by. While it usually sits on the verb, it is a 'mobile clitic,' meaning it can jump to conjunctions like gdyby or even to the beginning of a sentence for emphasis.
How It Works
The conditional mood in Polish is unique because of the mobility of its marker.
1. Attachment to the Verb:
This is the most common position. The particle attaches to the 3rd person past tense form (the l-participle).
• Stress Rules: The formal rule for Polish conditionals requires antepenultimate stress (3rd syllable from the end), e.g., ZRO-bił-bym. In modern casual speech, this often shifts to the penultimate syllable (2nd from the end), e.g., zro-BIŁ-bym. In the 1st and 2nd person plural, the formal rule requires pre-antepenultimate stress (4th syllable from the end), e.g., zro-BI-li-by-śmy.
2. Attachment to Conjunctions:
Certain conjunctions frequently 'trap' the clitic. It fuses with gdy to become gdyby and is standardly used with że as żeby in purpose and complement clauses. However, following the 2026 Polish Language Council orthography reform, by must be written separately after jeśli and jeżeli (e.g., jeśli bym miał...). While gdyby and żeby remain written together as exceptions, the personal endings (like -m or -ście) attach directly to the conjunction or the separated by particle, not the verb.
3. Mobile Placement (Floating):
In spoken Polish or for stylistic emphasis, by can move to attach after the first stressed word of the clause (often an adverb or pronoun). However, as a clitic, it can never appear at the absolute beginning of a sentence. Spelling Rule: When by attaches to a verb, it is written as one word, but when it floats to an adverb, pronoun, or noun, it is written as a separate word. For example: Chętnie bym to zjadł (I would gladly eat that), not chętniebym.
4. Morphological Rules:
- Gender: Because it uses the past tense form, you must use the correct gender in both singular and plural. In the singular: poszedłbym (masc.) vs. poszłabym (fem.). In the plural, you must distinguish between masculine-personal (poszlibyśmy) and non-masculine-personal (poszłybyśmy).
- Endings: 1st sg: -m, 2nd sg: -ś, 1st pl: -śmy, 2nd pl: -ście, 3rd person: (none).
Examples (5)
- Nie wiedziałbym, co zrobić bez ciebie.
I wouldn't know what to do without you.
Word by Word: Not he-knew-would-I, what to-do without you.
Standard placement: the clitic '-bym' is attached directly to the masculine past tense verb 'wiedział'.
- Gdybyście nam powiedzieli, pomoglibyśmy.
If you (plural) had told us, we would have helped.
Word by Word: If-would-you-all us told, we-helped-would-we.
In the first clause, the clitic '-ście' attaches to the conjunction 'gdyby'. In the second, '-śmy' attaches to the verb.
- Chętnie bym tam pojechał.
I would gladly go there.
Word by Word: Gladly would-I there went.
Mobile placement: 'bym' moves to the adverb 'chętnie' to emphasize the willingness of the action.
- Czy mogłabyś mi pomóc?
Could you (feminine) help me?
Word by Word: Whether could-would-you me to-help?
A polite request using the feminine form of the verb with the 2nd person singular clitic '-ś'.
- Wcześniej bym o tym nie pomyślał.
Earlier, I wouldn't have thought about that.
Word by Word: Earlier would-I about that not thought.
The clitic 'bym' follows the first word 'wcześniej' for a natural, spoken-style emphasis.
Common Mistakes
Double marking the conditional on both the conjunction and the verb.
Gdybym miałbym czas, poszedłbym.Gdybym miał czas, poszedłbym. The conditional ending should only appear once per clause. If it's on 'gdyby', it cannot be on the verb 'miał'.
Attaching the conditional particle to the infinitive form of the verb.
Chciećbym pić.Chciałbym pić.The conditional particle must attach to the past tense (l-participle) form, never the infinitive.
Using 'jeśli' for hypothetical 'if' instead of 'gdyby'.
Jeśli byłbym bogaty, kupiłbym dom.Gdybym był bogaty, kupiłbym dom.Use 'jeśli' for real possibilities and 'gdyby' for imaginary or hypothetical situations.
