gdyby
Conditional Clauses with Gdyby
In Polish, gdyby is the word for 'if' when talking about imaginary, unlikely, or impossible situations. It is always followed by a verb in the past tense form.
How It Works
Conditional sentences in Polish are divided into 'real' and 'unreal.' Gdyby is used exclusively for the unreal (hypothetical) ones.
1. The Structure
The particle by (which marks the conditional) merges with the conjunction gdy. You must then attach the mobile past endings to it:
- gdybym (I)
- gdybyś (you, sing.)
- gdyby (he/she/it)
- gdybyśmy (we)
- gdybyście (you, pl.)
- gdyby (they)
2. The Verb Form
The verb following gdyby must be in the past tense form (the ł-participle). Crucially, the verb agrees with the subject in gender and number, but the person marker is already on gdyby. For example: Gdybym miał (If I [masc.] had) vs. Gdybym miała (If I [fem.] had).
3. Present vs. Past Unreal
Polish does not have a separate 'Second' and 'Third' conditional like English. The same structure is used for 'If I were' and 'If I had been.' The specific time is understood through context, adverbs (like teraz or wtedy), or verb aspect.
4. The Result Clause
The second part of the sentence (the result) also uses the conditional by construction (e.g., kupiłbym - I would buy).
Examples (4)
- Gdybym miał więcej czasu, poszedłbym do kina.
If I had more time, I would go to the cinema.
Word by Word: If-I had more time, I-would-go to cinema.
A present hypothetical. The speaker (male) doesn't have time now. Note 'gdybym' carries the 1st person marker.
- Gdybyś mi wtedy powiedziała, wiedziałbym co robić.
If you had told me then, I would have known what to do.
Word by Word: If-you to-me then told, I-would-know what to-do.
A past counterfactual. The adverb 'wtedy' (then) and the context show this refers to a past event.
- Gdyby jutro padało, zostalibyśmy w domu.
If it rained tomorrow, we would stay at home.
Word by Word: If tomorrow rained, we-would-stay in home.
An unlikely future scenario. Even though it refers to tomorrow, the past tense form 'padało' is required after 'gdyby'.
- Gdyby ona tylko tu była!
If only she were here!
Word by Word: If she only here was!
Using 'gdyby' with 'tylko' expresses a wistful wish or regret.
Common Mistakes
Using the present tense after 'gdyby'.
Gdybym mam pieniądze, kupiłbym dom.Gdybym miał pieniądze, kupiłbym dom.In Polish, 'gdyby' must always be followed by the past tense form of the verb, never the present tense.
Doubling the 'by' particle in the same clause.
Gdybym miałbym czas...Gdybym miał czas...The conditional marker '-by-' should only appear once per clause. If it is attached to 'gdy', it cannot be attached to the verb.
Using 'jeśli' for impossible or unreal situations.
Jeśli byłbym ptakiem, latałbym.Gdybym był ptakiem, latałbym.'Jeśli' is for real possibilities. For impossible hypotheticals (like being a bird), 'gdyby' is required.
