Conditional by
The Polish conditional mood (tryb przypuszczający) uses the particle by combined with personal endings to express hypothetical actions, wishes, or polite requests. It is the equivalent of the English 'would'.
How It Works
The conditional mood is essential for navigating social nuances and hypothetical thinking in Polish.
1. Formation
The conditional is built on the past tense stem. The base is the 3rd person past form that matches the subject's gender and number. The formula is:
[3rd person past form] + [by] + [personal ending].
- 1st sg: -bym (masc: robiłbym / fem: robiłabym)
- 2nd sg: -byś (masc: robiłbyś / fem: robiłabyś)
- 3rd sg: -by (masc: robiłby / fem: robiłaby / neut: robiłoby)
- 1st pl: -byśmy (virile: robilibyśmy / non-virile: robiłybyśmy)
- 2nd pl: -byście (virile: robilibyście / non-virile: robiłybyście)
- 3rd pl: -by (virile: robiliby / non-virile: robiłyby)
Note: The usual first-person forms distinguish masculine chciałbym and feminine chciałabym. Choose the form used for the speaker; there is no single unmarked first-person conditional ending covering all genders in this standard paradigm.
2. Usage and Time
The conditional has three primary functions:
- Hypotheticals: Actions that are not real but could happen. Often paired with gdyby (if).
- Politeness: Softening a command into a request. Instead of 'Give me', you say 'Would you give me?'.
- Wishes: Expressing what you 'would like' to do, often using chciałbym.
Modern spoken Polish typically uses this single form for both present ('would') and past ('would have') hypothetical situations, with the distinction usually clear from context. However, in literary and formal contexts, a distinct past conditional exists (e.g., byłbym zrobił - 'I would have done').
3. The 'Floating' Particle
While by usually attaches to the verb, it is a 'movable clitic'. It cannot start a sentence; it must follow at least one word. In complex sentences, it often moves to follow conjunctions. Following the 2026 orthography reform, by must now be written separately after regular conjunctions (e.g., czy by, jeśli by), though historical exceptions like gdyby, żeby, and jakby remain fused as single words. When it follows subjects, pronouns, or question words, it is also written as a separate word. For example: Ja bym to zrobił (I would do it), Co byś zrobił? (What would you do?), and Gdzie byśmy poszli? (Where would we go?).
4. Stress/Pronunciation
In formal Polish, adding conditional endings does not shift the word stress. In zro-BI-li-by-śmy, the stress stays on BI. However, in everyday colloquial speech, many speakers shift the stress to the second-to-last syllable (e.g., zrobiliBYśmy). Building proficiency in both hearing and using these forms is key to natural speech.
Joined to the Verb, Separate After a Pronoun: Write zrobiłbym, zrobiłabyś, zrobilibyśmy as one word when the conditional particle follows the personal verb form directly. Contrast ja bym zrobił and co byś zrobiła?, where bym/byś are separate words. Do not write zrobił bym. The separate spelling after conjunctions introduced in 2026 does not change this rule for personal verb forms.
Examples (5)
- Gdybym miał czas, poszedłbym do kina.
If I had time, I would go to the cinema.
Word by Word: If-would-I had time, I-would-go to cinema.
This hypothetical pattern uses gdybym in the condition and poszedłbym in its conditional consequence. The by element is not repeated on miał because it is already in gdybym.
- Czy mogłabyś mi pomóc?
Could you help me?
Word by Word: Whether could-would-you me to-help?
This uses the feminine 2nd person singular form to make a polite request.
- Chciałbym zamówić kawę.
I would like to order a coffee.
Word by Word: I-would-want to-order coffee.
This is the standard way to order politely in a cafe, using the masculine 1st person singular conditional.
- Zjedlibyśmy coś dobrego.
We would eat something good.
Word by Word: We-would-eat something good.
A masculine-personal (virile) plural form expressing a collective wish.
- Kupiłabyś ten samochód?
Would you buy this car?
Word by Word: Would-you-buy this car?
A hypothetical question addressed to a woman.
Common Mistakes
Using the masculine form when a woman is speaking.
Different MeaningChciałbym kawę.Chciałabym kawę.A man says 'chciałbym kawę'. A woman says 'chciałabym', because the conditional is built on the gendered past tense and must agree with the speaker.
Doubling the 'by' particle when using 'gdyby'.
Gdybym miałbym czas...Gdybym miał czas...If the 'by' particle attaches to the conjunction (gdy + by + m), it should not be repeated on the verb.
Attaching 'by' to the present tense stem.
Chcę-bym...Chciałbym...The conditional must always be built on the 3rd person past tense form (chciał), never the present tense (chcę).
