chciałbym
Polite Requests with Chciałbym
In Polish, saying 'I want' (chcę) can sound blunt or demanding in shops, restaurants, or with strangers. To be polite, use the conditional form 'chciałbym' (I would like).
How It Works
1. Formation and Gender
This pattern is built using the past tense stem plus the conditional particle -by- and personal endings. Because it uses the past tense stem, you must match the gender of the person speaking:
- Masculine: chciał + by + m = chciałbym
- Feminine: chciała + by + m = chciałabym
2. Usage in Sentences
You can use this pattern in three main ways:
- With an Infinitive: To say what you would like to do. (e.g., Chciałbym zamówić...)
- With a Noun: To say what you would like to have. The noun usually goes into the Accusative case.
- With a Clause: To say what you want someone else to do, using żeby followed by a past-tense verb form.
3. Pronunciation and Stress
Unlike most Polish words where the stress is on the second-to-last syllable, the conditional has a special rule. In the singular forms, the stress stays on the root: CHCIAŁ-bym / CHCIA-ła-bym. In the plural, it moves even further back: CHCIEL-i-by-śmy.
4. Chciałbym vs. Poproszę
While 'chciałbym' is very polite, in service situations like ordering coffee, Poles often use poproszę ("I'll ask for/Please give me"). Both are perfectly polite, but 'poproszę' is more common for simple transactions.
Examples (5)
- Chciałbym zarezerwować stolik na dwie osoby.
I would like to reserve a table for two.
Word by Word: I-would-want to-reserve table for two persons.
Used by a male speaker with an infinitive verb.
- Chciałabym poprosić o rachunek.
I would like to ask for the bill.
Word by Word: I-would-want to-ask for bill.
Used by a female speaker. Combining 'chciałabym' with 'poprosić' is extra polite.
- Chcielibyśmy zobaczyć kartę win.
We would like to see the wine list.
Word by Word: We-would-want to-see card of-wines.
The plural form 'chcielibyśmy' is used when speaking for a group.
- Chciałbym kawę z mlekiem.
I would like a coffee with milk.
Word by Word: I-would-want coffee with milk.
Here, 'kawę' is in the accusative case as the direct object of the wish.
- Chciałabym, żebyś do mnie zadzwonił.
I would like you to call me.
Word by Word: I-would-want, so-that-you to me called.
When the subject changes (I want YOU to...), Polish uses 'żeby' + the past tense form of the second verb.
Common Mistakes
Using the masculine form when a woman is speaking.
Different MeaningChciałbym.ChciałabymBecause this form is based on the past tense, it is gender-specific. A man says chciałbym, which is correct for him. A woman must say chciałabym.
Translating 'I would like you to...' literally.
Chciałbym ciebie iść.Chciałbym, żebyś poszedł.You cannot use an object pronoun and an infinitive like in English. You must use a 'żeby' clause.
Stressing the wrong syllable.
chciał-BYMCHCIAŁ-bymThe conditional particle '-bym' does not count toward the standard penultimate stress rule in the singular.
