Future Forms of Być
The verb być (to be) has its own future forms (będę, będziesz, etc.). Use them alone to say 'I will be' or combine them with other verbs to talk about future processes.
How It Works
The future forms of być are essential for building future sentences. Unlike the present tense, these forms are regular in their endings (using the standard -ę, -esz pattern), but notice that the stem (będ-) is completely different from the infinitive (być).
1. Conjugation Table:
- będę - I will be
- będziesz - you will be (singular)
- będzie - he/she/it will be
- będziemy - we will be
- będziecie - you will be (plural)
- będą - they will be
Because the verb endings clearly show who is doing the action, subject pronouns (ja, ty, my, etc.) are usually left out.
2. Usage as a Copula (Standalone):
When you want to say someone 'will be' something, use these forms. Note that if you follow it with a noun, you generally use the instrumental case (e.g., Będę lekarzem). However, with the To będzie... (That will be...) construction, the noun stays in the nominative case (e.g., To będzie mój dom). If followed by a standalone adjective, the adjective stays in the nominative (e.g., On będzie wysoki). But if the adjective modifies a noun, it must match that noun in the instrumental case (e.g., On będzie dobrym lekarzem).
3. Usage as an Auxiliary (Helper):
To form the future of imperfective verbs, you combine a form of będę with either the infinitive or the 'L-participle' (the past tense form).
- Będę czytać (Infinitive - simpler)
- Będę czytał/czytała (Participle - shows gender. For 3rd-person neuter subjects, use the -ło ending, e.g., dziecko będzie czytało)
When using the participle in the plural, you must choose the correct gender: use -li for the masculine-personal plural (e.g., będziemy czytali) and -ły for the non-masculine-personal plural (e.g., będziemy czytały).
Modal Verbs: With móc, musieć, chcieć, the L-form is often preferred, especially before another infinitive: Będę musiał czekać (I will have to wait). Będę musieć czekać is also grammatical; avoiding two infinitives is a stylistic preference, not a ban.
4. Negation and Existence:
To negate these forms, place nie directly before the form of być (e.g., nie będę).
Important: When using nie będzie to mean "there will not be [something/someone]", the subject must change from the nominative to the genitive case. For example: Będzie chleb (There will be bread) becomes Nie będzie chleba (There will be no bread). Crucially, in these negative existential sentences, the verb never pluralizes. It stays 'frozen' in the 3rd-person singular (nie będzie) regardless of whether the missing noun is singular or plural (e.g., Nie będzie autobusów - There will be no buses).
5. Important Distinction:
Never use będę with perfective verbs. Perfective verbs (like zrobić) form their own future without a helper verb. Instead, they use present-tense conjugation endings to convey future meaning (e.g., zrobię conjugates like a present-tense verb but means 'I will do').
Reflexive Future Forms: Keep się with a reflexive verb: Będę się uczyć and Będę uczyć się both mean “I will study”. The gender-marking alternative is Będę się uczył/uczyła. Się is unstressed and may move within the clause; do not put it first in a neutral standard sentence.
Examples (5)
- Jutro będę w domu.
Tomorrow I will be at home.
Word by Word: Tomorrow I-will-be in home.
Here, 'będę' is used as a standalone verb to indicate a future location.
- Czy będziesz jutro pracować?
Will you be working tomorrow?
Word by Word: Whether you-will-be tomorrow to-work?
This uses 'będziesz' + infinitive to form the future of the imperfective verb 'pracować'.
- Oni będą grali w tenisa.
They will be playing tennis.
Word by Word: They will-be played in tennis.
This uses 'będą' + the L-participle (grali). This is a common way to form the future tense.
- Ona będzie dobrą lekarką.
She will be a good doctor.
Word by Word: She will-be good doctor.
When 'będzie' links a subject to a noun, the noun 'lekarką' must be in the instrumental case.
- Nie będzie nas w poniedziałek.
We won't be (here) on Monday.
Word by Word: Not will-be us in Monday.
The negative future of 'there is' (nie będzie) requires the genitive case (nas).
Common Mistakes
Using 'będę' with a perfective verb.
Będę napisać list.Napiszę list.Perfective verbs (like 'napisać') form the future by themselves. You only use 'będę' with imperfective verbs (like 'pisać').
Redundant use of the infinitive 'być'.
Będę być w kinie.Będę w kinie.'Będę' already means 'I will be'. Adding 'być' (to be) is like saying 'I will be be'.
Confusing 'będę' (I) with 'będą' (they).
Oni będę tam.Oni będą tam.The nasal vowel -ę is for the 1st person singular (I), while -ą is for the 3rd person plural (they).
