Imperfective Future With A Past Form

Level 3

The Imperfective Future with a Past Form is one of two ways to talk about ongoing or repeated actions in the future. It combines the future form of być (will be) with the 3rd person past tense form (the l-participle) of an imperfective verb.

How It Works

This construction is a compound tense used exclusively with imperfective verbs to describe actions that will be in progress, habitual, or incomplete in the future.

1. Construction
To form this tense, you need two components:

  • The future form of być (będę, będziesz, będzie, będziemy, będziecie, będą).
  • The 3rd person past tense form (l-participle) of the main verb.

2. Gender Agreement
Because it uses the past-form participle, the verb must agree with the subject's gender. This is particularly useful in the 1st and 2nd person (I, you, we), where the gender of the speaker or listener is otherwise hidden in the infinitive construction.

  • Masculine: On będzie czytał. (He will be reading.)
  • Feminine: Ona będzie czytała. (She will be reading.)
  • Neuter: Dziecko będzie czytało. (The child will be reading.)
  • Virile (Male People): Oni będą czytali. (They will be reading.)
  • Non-Virile (Others): One będą czytały. (They will be reading.)

3. Usage and Register
While semantically similar to the future with an infinitive, this past-form version is the most common choice in both spoken and written Polish. It is often considered more elegant or formal in prescriptive grammar, but it is standard in everyday communication. It is also the standard choice for determinate verbs of motion (like iść or jechać).

4. Mandatory Use
For modal verbs (such as musieć - to have to, or móc - to be able to), the past-form construction is the only correct way to form the future tense. Using an infinitive with these verbs (e.g., *będę musieć) is considered a grammatical error.

Examples (5)

  1. Jutro o tej porze będę czytała książkę.

Tomorrow at this time, I (fem.) will be reading a book.

Word by Word: Tomorrow at this time I-will-be read (fem. past) book.

The speaker is female, so she uses the feminine past form 'czytała' with the future auxiliary 'będę' to make her gender explicit.

  2. Oni będą pracowali nad tym projektem.

They will be working on this project.

Word by Word: They will-be worked (masc. pers. plural) over this project.

Uses the masculine-personal plural past form 'pracowali' to agree with 'oni'.

  3. Czy będziesz jutro szedł do pracy?

Will you (masc.) be walking to work tomorrow?

Word by Word: Whether you-will-be tomorrow walked (masc. past) to work?

For determinate verbs of motion like 'iść', the past-form construction is the standard choice.

  4. Będziemy musieli o tym porozmawiać.

We will have to talk about it.

Word by Word: We-will-be had-to (masc. pers. plural) about this talk.

For modal verbs like 'musieć', the past-form construction is the only grammatically correct option in the future tense.

  5. Dziecko będzie spało do rana.

The child will be sleeping until morning.

Word by Word: Child will-be slept (neuter past) until morning.

The neuter noun 'dziecko' requires the neuter past form 'spało'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the 1st or 2nd person past form instead of the 3rd person.

    Będę robiłem zakupy.
    Będę robił zakupy.

Even if the subject is 'I' (1st person), the participle must always be in the 3rd person form (robił/robiła). The person is already indicated by 'będę'.

  • Using this construction with perfective verbs.

    Będę napisał list.
    Napiszę list.

Perfective verbs form the future by using present-tense endings. They never use the auxiliary 'być'.

  • Gender mismatch between the subject and the participle.

    Anna będzie pisał list.
    Anna będzie pisała list.

Since this form uses a participle, it must agree with the subject's gender. Anna is feminine, so 'pisała' is required.
