Perfective Future
In Polish, perfective verbs conjugated with present-tense endings automatically refer to the future. This 'Simple Future' focuses on the completion or result of an action.
How It Works
The perfective future is the standard way to express a firm plan, a promise, or a specific achievement. It is formed by taking a perfective verb and applying standard present-tense endings.
1. Conjugation Patterns
The endings follow the standard Polish conjugation classes:
- -ę / -esz: e.g., napiszę (I will write/finish writing) from napisać.
- -ę / -isz/ysz: e.g., kupię (I will buy) from kupić.
- -am / -asz: e.g., przeczytam (I will read/finish reading) from przeczytać.
2. Meaning vs. Imperfective
While the future tense overview covers both types, remember that the perfective future emphasizes the result. If you say 'Zrobię to' (I will do it), you are implying the task will be completed. If you use the imperfective 'Będę to robić', you are focusing on the process of doing it.
3. Stem Mutations
Be aware that many verbs undergo stem changes when conjugated. For example, the 's' in pisać becomes 'sz' in napiszę. These are the same changes you see in the present tense of imperfective verbs.
Examples (4)
- Zadzwonię do ciebie wieczorem.
I will call you in the evening.
Word by Word: I-will-call to you evening-in.
The verb 'zadzwonić' is perfective. Using the first-person ending '-ę' creates a promise of a single, completed phone call.
- Jutro kupię nowy chleb.
Tomorrow I will buy new bread.
Word by Word: Tomorrow I-will-buy new bread.
The verb 'kupić' (to buy) focuses on the result of the purchase being finished.
- Oni napiszą ten raport do piątku.
They will write (finish) this report by Friday.
Word by Word: They will-write this report to Friday.
The perfective 'napisać' indicates that the report will be completed, not just that they will be in the process of writing it.
- Zjesz kolację z nami?
Will you eat dinner with us?
Word by Word: Will-you-eat dinner with us?
The perfective 'zjeść' implies eating the whole meal, whereas the imperfective 'jeść' would just ask about the activity of eating.
Common Mistakes
Adding 'będę' to a perfective verb.
Będę zrobić to jutro.Zrobię to jutro. The auxiliary 'będę' is ONLY used with imperfective verbs. Perfective verbs never take 'będę'; they change their own endings to show the future.
Using the perfective future when you mean the writing is already in progress.
Different MeaningTeraz napiszę list.Teraz piszę list.'Teraz napiszę list' is a good sentence, but it means 'I will write the letter now' (a decision to do it and finish it). To say you are in the middle of writing, use the imperfective present: 'Teraz piszę list.'
