چرا و چطور
Why and How
چرا رفتی؟ asks why you went. چطور آمدی؟ asks how you came. The question word does not require English-style verb inversion.
How It Works
Ask the reason. چرا رفتی؟ means “Why did you go?” The question word comes with an ordinary person-marked past verb. The answer may supply a cause or purpose; the question word itself does not select one required answer format.
Ask how. چطور آمدی؟ can ask what means or manner brought you here. چگونه آمدید؟ is a more formal question with plural-shaped or respectful address.
Ask a condition. حالتان چطور است؟ asks how you are. چطور does not always ask for a physical method or route.
In everyday Iranian, چطور can also ask “how come,” as in a surprised question about someone arriving now. Use the situation and tone to interpret that meaning rather than translating every چطور as a request for directions.
Keep the verb’s person form consistent with the listener: رفتی addresses one person familiarly, while رفتید can address a group or one person respectfully.
