Verb Agreement With Inanimate Plurals
کتابها روی میز است can describe several books with singular است. کتابها روی میز هستند also occurs with a plural predicate.
How It Works
Keep the noun’s count. In کتابها روی میز است, ـها still marks several books. است is a third-singular predicate used with an inanimate plural subject. Translate the clause naturally as the books are on the table, rather than changing books to one book.
Recognize plural agreement too. کتابها روی میز هستند uses a plural predicate. Modern Iranian Persian does not require a singular predicate for every inanimate set. Speakers and writers can differ, and the predicate and the way individual members are considered affect the choice. These are established possibilities, not a rule allowing every singular and plural verb to be swapped in every sentence.
Keep human groups distinct. دانشآموزان آمدند ordinarily uses a plural predicate for a group of students. So does دو دانشآموز آمدند: the counted noun has a singular shape after دو, but it refers to two people. A plural suffix on the noun and plural reference are separate clues.
Read an everyday example. این کتابا روی میزه is a common conversational counterpart of این کتابها روی میز است. کتابا is an informal plural form, and میزه contains the spoken copula. The sentence still refers to several books. Keep such spellings labeled as everyday Iranian.
Do not extend the exception to every person. The inanimate-plural pattern does not erase the first- and second-person paradigms or the respectful forms used with شما. Read what the subject refers to and the actual construction before deciding that an ending is inconsistent.
