نـ + Present Stem: Negative Command

Simple Negative Commands

Level 3

نرو means do not go, and نروید addresses a group or one person respectfully. Keep the same address choice as in the positive command.

How It Works

Negate the request. برو → نرو changes “Go” to “Do not go.” بخوان → نخوان changes “Read” to “Do not read.” It does not use the ordinary-present prefix نمی‌ to make this basic command.

Keep the address choice. نرو is familiar singular; نروید is plural-shaped or respectful. A polite request can include لطفاً, as in لطفاً در را باز نکنید.

For a compound, the nonverbal element remains: باز کن → باز نکن. Put the negative prefix on the verb, not on the separate word باز.

Learn the known vowel-initial forms. بیا becomes نیا, and بیاور becomes نیاور. The written ی shows why a purely mechanical letter replacement can miss the actual command.

Classical or poetic material also has a prohibitive مـ, as in مگو. Recognize that as a labeled literary form; it is not the beginner default for an everyday Iranian request.
