Offers and Taarof in Context

Level 5

At a doorway: بفرمایید. → please come in. Handing over a cup: بفرمایید. → here you are.

How It Works

Read the immediate setting. At an open doorway, بفرمایید داخل invites entry. During a conversation, بفرمایید can give the other person the floor. An offered object can make it equivalent to here you are.

Distinguish the action from a literal verb gloss. بفرمایید چای offers tea in the stated setting. A word-for-word gloss of فرمودن (present stem فرمای) does not explain the practical function of the invitation.

Respond to the actual offer. ممنون، لطف دارید expresses appreciation; نه، ممنون، چای نمی‌خواهم declines tea clearly. Tone and relationship can add warmth, formality or insistence. The same exchange need not follow one universal script.

Avoid fixed refusal counts. تعارف is not a rule requiring a learner to refuse exactly two or three times. Check whether an invitation is sincere from the interaction, and state your acceptance or refusal clearly when misunderstanding would matter.
