Being Present and Existing With هست
اینجا آب هست means there is water here. هستم and its other person forms can say who is present or describe someone.
How It Works
Say something is there. اینجا آب هست. states that water is available here. Compare آب سرد است., which describes the water as cold. The contrast is a helpful starting point rather than a wall between two verbs.
Say who is present. من اینجا هستم. uses هستم for the speaker. The forms are هستم، هستی، هست، هستیم، هستید، هستند. Verb endings show person and number.
Recognize copular uses too. من دانشجو هستم. says “I am a university student.” In third-person descriptions, هست can add emphasis or appear as a conversational copula; do not label every such use wrong. Neutral formal descriptions often use است.
The negative forms use نیست: اینجا آب نیست. means there is no water here. Do not construct the negative by putting نـ in front of هست.
