دارم + می Verb
An Action Happening Now
دارم کتاب میخوانم means I am reading a book now. Here دارم helps mark the action in progress rather than naming something I own.
How It Works
Two verbs, one actor. دارم کتاب میخوانم has first-singular دارم and میخوانم. کتاب belongs to the reading action; this is not the possession statement کتاب دارم.
For a group, داریم کار میکنیم means “We are working.” The matching first-plural endings show that the same group is undergoing the activity. Both lexical form and person matter.
In سارا دارد کتاب میخواند, the written-standard third-singular forms match. Common everyday داره کتاب میخونه uses the corresponding conversational forms.
The auxiliary does not require the action to be visible to the speaker at that exact instant in every possible context, but the construction presents it as unfolding. It does not automatically replace ordinary present verbs for habits.
A verb’s meaning also matters. Posture verbs can distinguish becoming seated from an established seated state, so learn their actual construction rather than adding دارم to every English “am” sentence.
