autre, autra

Other and Another

Level 2

Autre means other or another, and it agrees with its noun.

How It Works

Autre comes before the noun and agrees with it.

SingularPlural
Masculineautreautres
Feminineautraautras

With un or una it means another one: un autre cafè (another coffee), una autra taula (another table). With the definite article it means the other one: l'autre ostal (the other house), l'autra taula. The article drops its vowel before autre and autra.

When the noun is already known, leave it out: los autres means the others, and una autra means another one. The spelling is autre, with au, as in French. The Catalan form altre is not Occitan.

Examples (4)

  1. Vòli un autre cafè.

The noun is left out after autres.

  4. L'autre ostal es mai grand.

    L' replaces lo before autre.
