-इरहनु

Keeping on Doing

Level 4Sounds Like irahanu

The stem plus -इ plus रहनु shows an action that goes on and on.

How It Works

The -इ linker joins a stem to रहनु to say that the action continues. It is written as one word: बोलिरह्यो, परिरह्यो, रोइरह्यो.

PersonPresentPast
मगरिरहन्छुगरिरहेँ
तिमीगरिरहन्छौगरिरह्यौ
तपाईंगरिरहनुहुन्छगरिरहनुभयो

The past often tells how long something lasted: एक घण्टासम्म बोलिरह्यो (he went on talking for an hour). The present with -इरहन्छ suggests a habit of going on again and again, as in तिमी किन हाँसिरहन्छौ? (why do you keep laughing?).

Do not mix this with the progressive -इरहेको छ, which says what is happening now. Here रहनु is the main idea: the action does not stop. The word रहनु also means to stay.
