हजुर

Saying Yes and Pardon Politely

Level 1Sounds Like hajura

हजुर is a very polite answer when someone calls you or when you did not hear, and a very respectful you.

How It Works

हजुर has three jobs, and all of them are polite.

  • Answering a call. When a parent, a teacher or a shop owner says your name, you answer हजुर. It is like yes? in English.
  • Asking for a repeat. If you did not hear, say हजुर? and the speaker will say it again. It is gentler than के?.
  • Saying you with great respect. Many families use हजुर with grandparents, with in-laws and with elders: हजुर कहाँ जानुहुन्छ?

The verb after हजुर takes the same endings as तपाईं. You can also say हजुर to agree politely: हजुर, ठीक छ means yes, that is fine.

The word is respectful, so use it with older people and in formal places, and not with close friends your age. A close friend your age usually answers a call with a plain के?. Do not use it as a plain you with a child.
