-आलु / -इलो
Suffixes That Make Adjectives
-आलु and -इलो make adjectives from nouns: लजालु is shy, from लाज, and रसिलो is juicy, from रस.
How It Works
Two endings build adjectives from nouns. -आलु often describes someone who tends to have the quality, and -इलो something full of it.
| Noun | Adjective |
|---|---|
| लाज (shame) | लजालु (shy) |
| दया (kindness) | दयालु (kind) |
| झगडा (quarrel) | झगडालु (quarrelsome) |
| रस (juice) | रसिलो (juicy) |
| जोश (spirit) | जोशिलो (spirited) |
The base noun may change a little. लाज becomes लजा-, because the vowel of the first syllable shortens.
लजालु never changes. -इलो adjectives follow the -ो pattern: the plural usually ends in -आ, and for a woman or a female animal the ending is -ई. जोशिलो केटा, जोशिला केटाहरू, जोशिली केटी. Most nouns take only one of the two endings, so learn the pairs rather than guess them.
