-वाला

People Tied to a Thing

Level 4Sounds Like vālā

A noun plus वाला names the person who deals with it. It joins the noun.

How It Works

The ending वाला is added to a noun to name the person who sells it, drives it, has it or is known by it. It is usually written joined to the noun.

NounPerson
टेम्पोटेम्पोवाला (tempo driver)
दूधदूधवाला (milk seller)
तरकारीतरकारीवाली (a woman vegetable seller)
चश्माचश्मावाला (the one with glasses)

The ending works like an adjective. Before a man it is वाला, before a woman it is वाली, and for many people it is वाले. Other words that name a job, such as चालक for a driver, are common in writing, and वाला is the everyday spoken form.

The ending is more spoken than written. In a news report you would more likely read चालक or विक्रेता.
