Days of the Week

Level 2Sounds Like ā'itabāra, sōmabāra ra maṅgalabāra

The week runs आइतबार, सोमबार, मङ्गलबार, बुधबार, बिहीबार, शुक्रबार, शनिबार.

How It Works

The Nepali week starts on Sunday. The names are आइतबार (Sunday), सोमबार (Monday), मङ्गलबार (Tuesday), बुधबार (Wednesday), बिहीबार (Thursday), शुक्रबार (Friday) and शनिबार (Saturday). बार means day of the week, and each name ends in it.

A day usually needs no postposition. सोमबार म काम गर्छु means on Monday I work, with no word for on.

To ask the day, say आज कुन बार हो? (what day is it today?). The answer uses हो, because it says what the day is: आज बुधबार हो (today is Wednesday).

For every week on that day, add हरेक: हामी हरेक शनिबार बजार जान्छौँ (we go to the market every Saturday).

Saturday is the main weekly day off in Nepal, so many families plan trips and visits for that day.
