म्हणून

So and Therefore

Level 2Sounds Like mhaṇūna

In this pattern the cause comes first, and म्हणून opens the result.

How It Works

म्हणून means "so" or "that is why". Put the cause first and the result after म्हणून.

CauseResult
पाऊस आला,म्हणून मी थांबले.
आज सुट्टी आहे,म्हणून शाळा बंद आहे.
खूप उशीर झाला,म्हणून आम्ही रिक्षाने गेलो.

Write a comma before म्हणून. Each clause keeps its own tense and its own verb agreement. The two clauses do not need the same subject.

For the other order, with the result first, use कारण: मी थांबले, कारण पाऊस आला.

The cause can be a feeling: मला भूक लागली आहे, म्हणून मी जेवते. The result can be an action, a state or a decision.

A new sentence can also open with the result, using म्हणून or त्यामुळे: पाऊस आला. म्हणून मी थांबले.

In a short answer, म्हणून can end the cause: तू का आला नाहीस? मला बरे नव्हते म्हणून.
