What Needs to Happen

Level 5

The noun phrase after ta' specifies what is needed.

How It Works

Hawn bżonn ta' states that a need exists. The phrase after ta' identifies its content: a resource such as water or chairs, or an activity expressed as a noun. The construction does not name who needs the resource or who must provide it.

Here hawn has an existential or presentational function. It stays unchanged with singular or plural resources, and Maltese requires no dummy pronoun corresponding to English “it.” Compare hawn siġġijiet, “there are chairs here,” with hawn bżonn ta' siġġijiet, “chairs are needed.” The first asserts presence; the second asserts need. An activity noun likewise names necessary work without specifying its actor. This nominal pattern expresses a need rather than a finite instruction telling a particular person to perform an action.

Develop the independently scoped nominal need pattern through water, chairs and research. Hawn stays invariant, and neither an experiencer nor a responsible actor must be supplied.
