One or More Than One
Plurals can change an ending, add a suffix or reshape a word internally.
How It Works
An ordinary count noun distinguishes one item from several, but Maltese has no universal plural suffix. A plural may replace an ending, add material, change the internal pattern or use a substantially different word. Learn singular and plural together.
Compare karta speċjali → karti speċjali, ‘a special sheet → special sheets’; kejk sabiħ → kejkijiet sbieħ, ‘a beautiful cake → beautiful cakes’; and għasfur aħmar → għasafar ħomor, ‘a red bird → red birds’. Adjectives follow their own agreement paradigms.
The definite article has no separate plural form. Some nouns also distinguish a collective, singulative or dual. Numerals can select construction-specific noun forms, so a singular-looking noun does not always refer to exactly one item. Alternative plurals also exist; their distribution must be learned individually rather than inferred from one ending.

Shift attention to the noun's lexical number paradigm. The three contrasts illustrate ending replacement, suffixation and internal change while keeping descriptive agreement separate from noun formation.
