Borrowed Noun Endings

Level 4

Operazzjoni and organizzazzjoni are borrowed feminine nouns; stamperija names printworks.

How It Works

Borrowed operazzjoni, ‘operation’, and organizzazzjoni, ‘organization’, are feminine nouns. Their plurals are operazzjonijiet and organizzazzjonijiet. The ending helps recognize a noun family, but does not alone specify whether a word names an activity, a result or an institution.

The sequence -ija occurs in words with different origins and meanings. Borrowed stamperija, with plural stamperiji, names printworks. Stqarrija, ‘statement’, is an individual verbal noun associated with stqarr, ‘declared’. Shared final letters do not make these nouns instances of the same derivation.

Compare the establishment phrase stamperija fil-villaġġ, ‘printworks in the village’, with the activity phrase l-istampar tal-kotba, ‘the printing of the books’. Interpret the complete noun rather than translating every occurrence of an ending as an action.
