noun stem + -ijiet
Plurals in Ijiet
Compare kejkijiet, ħinijiet and internally adjusted trufijiet.
How It Works
The ending -ijiet forms plurals in particular noun paradigms. In kejk → kejkijiet, ‘cake → cakes’, the singular remains visible. Likewise, ħin → ħinijiet gives ‘time → times’. A different formation is tarf → trufijiet, ‘edge → edges’: the internally changed base truf precedes the suffix.
Compare kejk sabiħ, ‘a beautiful cake’, with kejkijiet sbieħ, ‘beautiful cakes’. The noun suffix does not determine the adjective’s ending; adjective agreement follows a separate paradigm.
This pattern does not replace other plural formations. Some nouns have several number forms with individual distributions. Recognizing -ijiet does not establish those distinctions or make alternative plurals interchangeable. Learn the complete plural and its meaning, rather than attaching the suffix to every singular.
