Borrowed Verbs in Ixxa

Level 3

aġixxa means ‘he acted’; aġixxiet means ‘she acted’; naġixxu means ‘we act’.

How It Works

The borrowed verb aġixxa, from Italian agire, means ‘act’ or ‘behave’. Its masculine singular perfect ends in -ixxa, while feminine aġixxiet ends differently. First- and second-person singular share aġixxejt; plural perfect forms include aġixxejna, aġixxejtu, aġixxew.

The imperfect has singular naġixxi, taġixxi, jaġixxi and plural naġixxu, taġixxu, jaġixxu. Feminine third-person singular shares taġixxi with second-person singular. Positive commands are aġixxi and aġixxu, for one or several addressees.

Keep the doubled xx in ordinary spelling. These forms do not come from appending one ending to the unchanged perfect citation form. Borrowed origin alone does not establish this pattern: English-derived pparkja follows a different borrowed-verb paradigm. This attested paradigm supports the displayed forms, without predicting every borrowed verb from its ending.
