Hearing a Longer Consonant

Level 1

Sequences such as tt, pp, ll can represent geminates: consonants with greater duration.

How It Works

For a geminate, hold the consonant longer without inserting a vowel between its written copies. qattus “cat” and pittura “painting” contain tt; kappell “hat” contains both pp and ll. These are ordinary spellings.

Compare Il-karozza waqfet. “The car stopped” with Nina waqqfet il-karozza. “Nina stopped the car”. The second uses the transitive derived verb waqqaf. Both are feminine singular perfect forms, matching their subjects.

Form II can double a middle root consonant; a geminate root already contains repeated consonants. Neither fact gives every doubled word a causative meaning. Learn the actual lexical relationship. Consonant length does not require a fixed timing ratio. Some doubled spellings also have lexical pronunciation alternatives: zz can have voiceless or voiced affricate pronunciations, depending on the word.
