qabel ma

Before an Event

Level 4

In “before A, B,” B precedes A.

How It Works

Write qabel ma before a finite clause naming the later event. Either clause can come first without reversing their temporal relationship. Each predicate agrees with its own subject, so the participants need not be the same.

Compare qabel ma tasal, “before you arrive,” with negative ma tasalx, “you do not arrive.” Temporal ma does not deny the arrival and does not require a negative ending. An imperfect can name an anticipated occasion in a plan or instruction; perfect predicates can describe a past sequence.

In Qabel ma toħroġ, ħu ċ-ċavetta, taking the key precedes going out. The instruction addresses one person. A prospective before clause names a later occasion without claiming that it has already occurred; the connector supplies relative order.
