supposition with ikun
A Tentative Inference
In suitable embedded contexts, ikun with an imperfect can express a possibility; with a perfect and deadline it can mark future completion.
How It Works
In a suitable embedded clause, ikun with an imperfect can express eventuality or probability. Taħseb li l-aħmar ikun jixraqli? asks “Do you think red would suit me?” The choice of red is considered rather than asserted as a fact. The auxiliary and jixraq identify the same masculine singular subject; the attached recipient refers to the speaker. This epistemic use is relatively infrequent and depends on its syntactic context.
In independent or coordinated clauses, this auxiliary can instead express a logical consequence or inference. Do not translate every occurrence as a conjecture: the following verb form and reference time matter. In aktarx sa għada nkun ktibt, “by tomorrow I will probably have written,” probability comes from aktarx, while the auxiliary-plus-perfect chain marks future completion. This is a different chain from the embedded possibility above.
Both finite verbs retain participant agreement. In the third card, waqqfu x-xogħol means “they stopped the work,” with the work as object; waqfu would mean “they stopped.”
Examples (4)
- Aktarx sa għada nkun ktibt il-messaġġ.
By tomorrow I will probably have written the message.
Aktarx qualifies a first-person prediction about future completion.
- Aktarx sal-lejla Marija tkun ħarġet.
By this evening Marija will probably have gone out.
The deadline locates completion in the future; both verbs identify Marija.
- Aktarx sal-Ħadd ikunu waqqfu x-xogħol.
By Sunday they will probably have stopped the work.
Waqqfu is transitive perfect plural, with x-xogħol as its object.
- Taħseb li l-aħmar ikun jixraqli?
Do you think red would suit me?
Embedded ikun with the imperfect jixraq presents a considered possibility. The masculine singular subject is the colour red; the attached recipient refers to me.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Contrast probability-qualified future completion with embedded ikun-plus-imperfect eventuality. Track the supporting context, the source of probability and the separate subject and recipient roles rather than assigning one conjectural meaning to every auxiliary occurrence.
- jkun + perfectAn Event Completed by a Reference Time
The three deadline cards use future completion, allowing the learner to assign probability to aktarx rather than automatically to the auxiliary.
Level 5 - li + clauseLinking a Following Clause
The colour-choice question embeds the considered proposition after taħseb li; recognizing that boundary helps explain its context-dependent conjectural reading.
Level 2 - l- + person formAn Attached Recipient
The attached recipient in jixraqli identifies the speaker separately from the masculine singular colour subject shared by ikun and jixraq.
