lil + person
A Personal Object with Lil
Lil Pawlu can identify Paul as the affected person or a recipient.
How It Works
Lil generally marks a specific human or humanized nominal object. Before a personal name it remains separate: lil Pawlu. With an article-bearing noun it combines with the article, including assimilation: lill-għalliem and lit-tifel. The phrase names its participant explicitly.
The verb determines that participant's role. In rat lil Pawlu, Paul is the person seen, so English says ‘saw Paul’. In tat ktieb lil Rita, Rita receives the book. English ‘to’ does not reliably identify a Maltese indirect object: kellem takes a personal object although English says ‘spoke to’. Human specificity describes the general personal-object pattern; it does not require lil before every definite noun or establish an exceptionless rule for every predicate.

How It Connects
Learn This First
Introduce explicit personal objects and recipients through seeing, speaking and giving. The predicate determines each participant's role and English rendering; specificity and article combinations do not justify lil before every definite noun.
- l- + person formAn Attached Recipient
The earlier recipient lesson distinguishes beneficiaries from direct objects, helping interpret lil Pawlu as the person seen and lil Rita as the recipient.
Level 3 - An Article Matching the Next Consonant
Article assimilation helps explain lil combinations such as lit-tifel, while the lesson introduces lill-għalliem and separate lil before a name.
