How It Works

Online posts and messages often mix Hindi into Maithili because most people read and write Hindi at school. Knowing the common mix-ups helps you read and write cleanly.

Hindi verbs show gender (गया, गई). Maithili verbs show respect far more (गेलाह, गेल), and gender only in a few respected forms (गेलीह).
Hindi uses मैं, आप, यह, वह; Maithili uses हम, अहाँ, ई, ओ.
Hindi future ends in -गा; Maithili uses -ब and -त.

When you read a mixed text, translate the Hindi parts back into Maithili in your head. When you write, keep to Maithili words and forms.
