Future and Da Forms of Be

Level 2Sounds Like sum: ḱe bidam; da bidam

For will be, say ќе бидам: Ќе бидам дома. (I will be home.) After да, use the same forms: Сакам да бидам лекар. (I want to be a doctor.)

How It Works

You know the present forms of to be from Present Forms of Be: сум, си, е, сме, сте, се. For the future and after да, Macedonian uses another set of forms:

  • (јас) бидам
  • (ти) бидеш
  • (тој, таа, тоа) биде
  • (ние) бидеме
  • (вие) бидете
  • (тие) бидат

Future: put ќе before these forms, as with any verb in The Future With Ќе: Ќе бидам дома. Утре ќе биде топло. The negative is нема да бидам (I will not be).

After да: Macedonian has no infinitive, so to be is да + a form with a person ending: Сакам да бидам лекар. (I want to be a doctor.) Сакаш да бидеш таму?

These forms do not stand alone for the present. For I am tired now, say Уморен сум, not бидам. The command forms come from the same verb: Биди добар! (Be good!) Бидете тивки! (Be quiet!)

In everyday speech you will also hear ќе сум and да сум. They are common and not errors, but ќе бидам and да бидам are the forms to learn first.

  1. Ќе бидам дома во пет часот.

    I will be home at five o'clock.

    Ќе + бидам makes the future of to be.

  2. Утре ќе биде топло.

    Tomorrow it will be warm.

    Биде is the form for it.

  3. Сакам да бидам лекар.

    I want to be a doctor.

    After да, use бидам.

  4. Ќе бидеме таму за десет минути.

    We will be there in ten minutes.

    Бидеме is the form for we.

  5. Нема да бидам на работа утре.

    I will not be at work tomorrow.

    The negative future is нема да бидам.

  6. Биди добар!

    Be good!

    The command form comes from the same verb.

Common Mistakes

  • Using бидам alone for the present.

    Бидам уморен.
    Уморен сум.

    Бидам needs ќе, да or a similar word before it. For now, use сум.

  • Leaving out да, as if Macedonian had an infinitive.

    Сакам бидам лекар.
    Сакам да бидам лекар.

    Macedonian has no to form. Put да before бидам.
