The Negative Future

The negative of the future is нема да plus a present-tense verb: Нема да дојдам (I will not come).

How It Works

Form. Start from the future with ќе and swap ќе for нема да: Ќе одиме на море → Нема да одиме на море. Нема is the same word as in има and нема, but in this phrase it stays in the he or she form for every person: Јас нема да одам, Ние нема да одиме.

Short pronouns. Short pronouns and се come after да, right before the verb: Нема да те чекам, Нема да му кажам, Нема да се вратам доцна.

Aspect. As after ќе, both aspects are possible. Нема да ја прочитам книгата means I will not read the book through. Нема да читам вечерва means I will not spend the evening reading.

Negative words. Нема да already carries the negation, so никој, ништо and никогаш need no extra не: Никој нема да дојде, Ништо нема да купам.

Не ќе. In older writing, songs and some speech you may also meet не ќе with a verb: Не ќе дојдам. It is grammatical, but it sounds literary or strongly determined. In everyday speech and writing, use нема да.

    Нема stays the same; the ending of одиме shows the person.

    I will not tell Marko.

    The short pronoun му comes after да, right before the verb.

  5. Тие нема да се вратат пред осум.

    They will not be back before eight.

  6. Зошто нема да дојдеш?

    Why won't you come?

    A question word goes before нема да.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping ќе after нема да.

    Нема да ќе дојдам.
    Нема да дојдам.

    Нема да replaces ќе. The two never appear together.

  • Changing нема for the person.

    Немам да дојдам утре.
    Нема да дојдам утре.

    In the negative future, нема keeps the he or she form for everyone. Only the verb after да changes.

  • Putting не after ќе.

    Ќе не дојдам утре.
    Нема да дојдам утре.

    Не cannot follow ќе. Use нема да for the negative future.
