Asking and Allowing Someone

Level 4Sounds Like bara; moli; dozvoluva + da

Name who is asked or allowed, then add да + a present verb: Ме замоли да му помогнам. (He asked me to help him.) Не ми дозволуваат да излегувам доцна. (They don't let me go out late.)

How It Works

The verbs and their person.

  • моли, замоли + ме, те, го, ја: Го молев да ми прости. (I begged him to forgive me.)
  • дозволува, дозволи + ми, ти, му, ѝ: Дозволете ми да се претставам. (Allow me to introduce myself.)
  • забранува, забрани + ми, ти, му, ѝ: Лекарот ми забрани да пијам кафе. (The doctor forbade me to drink coffee.)
  • бара + од + person: Професорот бара од нас да читаме секој ден. (The professor asks us to read every day.)

The да part. The verb after да is in the present and has the ending of the person who will act: Ме замоли да му помогнам (I will help), Не ѝ дозволуваат да излегува (she would go out). Each verb keeps its own short pronouns: in Ме замоли да му помогнам, ме goes with замоли and му goes with помогнам.

Бара. Without a person, бара да means "wants" or "demands": Шефот бара да завршиме до петок. (The boss wants us to finish by Friday.) Be careful: Ме бара on its own means "He is looking for me."

Polite please. Те молам and ве молам come from моли, and they can also take a да clause: Те молам да не кажуваш никому. (Please don't tell anyone.) See polite everyday phrases.

Aspect pairs. Моли, дозволува and забранува describe an ongoing or repeated request. Замоли, дозволи and забрани describe a single one: Ме замоли (he asked me, once).

Моли and замоли take the object pronouns ме, те, го, ја, not ми, ти, му.

  • Using ме with дозволува.

Не ме дозволуваат да излегувам доцна.
Не ми дозволуваат да излегувам доцна.

You allow something to someone, so дозволува takes the to-someone pronouns ми, ти, му, ѝ.
