buvau + -ęs

Past Perfect with Buvau

Level 4

buvau, buvai, buvo + -ęs / -usi = had done: Kai atėjau, jis jau buvo išėjęs (When I arrived, he had already left).

How It Works

1. Forms. Past of būti + participle agreeing with the subject:

  • buvau išėjęs / išėjusi (I had left)
  • buvai išėjęs / išėjusi
  • buvo išėjęs / išėjusi
  • buvome išėję / išėjusios
  • buvote išėję / išėjusios
  • buvo išėję / išėjusios

2. Before another past event. Use it when one thing was already over before something else happened, often with jau (already) and a kai clause:

  • Kai grįžome, vaikai jau buvo užmigę. (When we came back, the children had already fallen asleep.)
  • Traukinys jau buvo išvažiavęs, kai atbėgome į stotį. (The train had already left when we ran into the station.)

3. Experience up to a past moment. With niekada (never), it says what someone had or had not done by then: Ji niekada anksčiau nebuvo mačiusi jūros (She had never seen the sea before). The ne- goes on buvo.

4. A state that was later undone. Buvau pamiršęs tavo numerį, bet vėliau prisiminiau (I had forgotten your number, but later I remembered it).

5. Not always needed. The Lithuanian past perfect is not required in every sentence that uses an English past perfect. When the order is clear, the simple past or another phrasing is enough: Kai atėjau, jo jau nebuvo (When I arrived, he was no longer there).

Examples (6)

  1. Kai atėjau, jis jau buvo išėjęs.

When I arrived, he had already left.

Išėjęs agrees with jis (masculine singular).

  2. Kai paskambinai, aš jau buvau atsikėlusi.

When you called, I had already gotten up.

Said by a woman: atsikėlusi is feminine.

  3. Kai grįžome, vaikai jau buvo užmigę.

When we came back, the children had already fallen asleep.

Užmigę is the masculine plural participle.

  4. Traukinys jau buvo išvažiavęs, kai atbėgome į stotį.

The train had already left when we ran into the station.

  5. Buvau pamiršęs tavo numerį, bet vėliau prisiminiau.

I had forgotten your number, but later I remembered it.

    Said by a man.

  6. Ji niekada anksčiau nebuvo mačiusi jūros.

She had never seen the sea before.

Negation goes on buvo. Jūros is genitive after a negated verb.

Common Mistakes

  • Not matching the participle to a female subject.

    Ji jau buvo išėjęs.
    Ji jau buvo išėjusi.

The participle agrees with the subject. For ji use -usi; for jis use -ęs.

  • Using the present of būti in a past story.

Kai atėjau, jis jau yra išėjęs.
Kai atėjau, jis jau buvo išėjęs.

The moment you are describing is in the past, so būti must be in the past too: buvo.
