esu + -ęs

Present Perfect with Esu

Level 4

esu buvęs (a man), esu buvusi (a woman) = I have been. Ar esi buvęs Vilniuje? = Have you ever been to Vilnius?

How It Works

The forms. Only būti changes for person. The participle shows gender and number.

  • aš esu buvęs / buvusi
  • tu esi buvęs / buvusi
  • jis yra buvęs, ji yra buvusi
  • mes esame buvę / buvusios
  • jūs esate buvę / buvusios
  • jie yra buvę, jos yra buvusios
With polite jūs to one person, the participle is singular: Ar jūs esate buvusi Palangoje?

Experience: ever and never. A common use is experience: Ar esi valgęs cepelinų? (Have you ever eaten cepelinai?) For "never", negate būti: Niekada nesu matęs sniego. (I have never seen snow.) The third person is nėra buvęs.

A past action that counts now. Esu skaičiusi šią knygą, todėl žinau pabaigą. (I have read this book, so I know the ending.)

The simple past is still more common. The Lithuanian simple past can sometimes translate an English present perfect. Vakar skaičiau knygą (I read a book yesterday) needs no perfect. Use esu + -ęs when you want to stress experience or result.

Other tenses of būti. The same participle with buvau or būsiu gives the past perfect and the future perfect.

Examples (6)

  1. Ar esi buvęs Vilniuje?

Have you ever been to Vilnius?

Asked of a man. To a woman: Ar esi buvusi Vilniuje?

  2. Esu skaičiusi šią knygą.

    I have read this book.

    Said by a woman.

  3. Niekada nesu valgęs cepelinų.

    I have never eaten cepelinai.

Negation goes on būti: nesu. After it, cepelinų is genitive.

  4. Mes esame girdėję apie tą restoraną.

We have heard about that restaurant.

  5. Jis yra dirbęs Londone.

    He has worked in London.

This says he has worked in London at some point; it does not by itself tell us whether he still does.

  6. Ar jūs esate buvusi Palangoje?

    Have you been to Palanga?

Polite jūs to one woman, so the participle is feminine singular.

Common Mistakes

  • A woman using the masculine participle about herself.

    Esu skaitęs šią knygą.
    Esu skaičiusi šią knygą.

The participle agrees with the speaker. If the speaker is a woman, use the -usi form: skaičiusi.

  • Using the singular participle with a plural subject.

    Mes esame buvęs Rygoje.
    Mes esame buvę Rygoje.

With mes, the participle is plural: buvę (or buvusios for a group of women).

  • Using the passive -tas participle instead of the active -ęs.

    Esu skaitytas šią knygą.
    Esu skaitęs šią knygą.

Esu skaitytas would mean "I have been read". To say you have done something, use the active participle.
