kas + accusative

Every with Kas

Level 4

Kas + accusative time word = every: kas savaitę (every week), kas rytą (every morning), kas antrą dieną (every other day).

How It Works

1. Every day, week or month. A common pattern puts kas before a time word in the accusative:

  • kas rytą (every morning), kas vakarą (every evening)
  • kas savaitę (every week), kas mėnesį (every month)

The nominative is also standard in frequency expressions, such as kas savaitė and kas vakaras. The accusative pattern means the same as kiekvieną + accusative: kas savaitę and kiekvieną savaitę both mean every week.

2. Every so many. Add a number. It agrees with the noun, so feminine nouns take feminine numbers:

  • kas dvi savaites (every two weeks)
  • kas aštuonias valandas (every eight hours)
  • kas penkiolika minučių (every fifteen minutes, with the genitive after penkiolika)

3. Every other, every third. Use an ordinal in the accusative: kas antrą dieną (every other day), kas trečią savaitę (every third week).

4. One-word forms. Some common phrases are written as one word: kasdien (every day), kasryt (every morning), kasvakar (every evening), kasmet (every year). You will also often see kas metai for every year.

5. Every third person. When you count people or things instead of time, the ordinal stays in the same case as the noun: Kas trečias mokinys lanko būrelį (Every third student goes to a club).

Examples (6)

  1. Kas savaitę skambinu mamai.

I call my mom every week.

Word by Word: Every week I-call mom.

Savaitę is the accusative of savaitė.

  2. Kas rytą bėgioju parke.

I go running in the park every morning.

  3. Laistau gėles kas antrą dieną.

I water the flowers every other day.

Antrą is the accusative of the ordinal antra (second).

  4. Autobusas važiuoja kas penkiolika minučių.

The bus comes every fifteen minutes.

After penkiolika the noun is in the genitive plural.

  5. Šiuos vaistus reikia gerti kas aštuonias valandas.

This medicine must be taken every eight hours.

Valandas is feminine, so the number is aštuonias.

  6. Kasdien einu į darbą pėsčiomis.

I walk to work every day.

Kasdien is written as one word.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a masculine number with a feminine time word.

    Susitinkame kas du savaites.
    Susitinkame kas dvi savaites.

Savaitė is feminine, so the number must be dvi. The same goes for valanda: kas keturias valandas.
