Ordinal Numbers
pirmas first · antras second · trečias third · ketvirtas fourth · penktas fifth
How It Works
The forms. Many ordinals end in -tas, with changes to the number stem: ketvirtas, penktas, šeštas, septintas, aštuntas, devintas, dešimtas. Then vienuoliktas (11th), dvyliktas (12th), dvidešimtas (20th). The first three are special: pirmas, antras, trečias. Feminine forms end in -a: pirma, antra, trečia, penkta.
Endings like adjectives. Ordinals change like adjectives in -as: pirmas, pirmo, pirmam, pirmą, pirmu, pirmame. Trečias has a soft ending: trečio, trečiam, trečią, trečiu, trečiame; feminine trečia, trečios, trečiai, trečią, trečia, trečioje. For example: Pirmą kartą esu Lietuvoje. (I am in Lithuania for the first time.)
Compound ordinals. Only the last word becomes an ordinal: dvidešimt pirmas (21st), šimtas antras (102nd).
Definite forms. In dates, names and fixed terms, ordinals often take the definite ending, see definite adjectives: Antrasis pasaulinis karas (the Second World War), rugsėjo pirmoji (the first of September). See dates.
Writing them. With digits, add a hyphen and the ending: 1-as, 2-a, 3-ias. Centuries often use Roman numerals: XXI amžius (the 21st century).
Asking. Kelintas, kelinta asks "which one in order?": Kelintame aukšte gyveni? (Which floor do you live on?) The same word asks the time: Kelinta valanda?

- Antra diena buvo šiltesnė.
The second day was warmer.

I am in Vilnius for the first time.
- Kelintame aukšte tavo butas?

Only the last word, pirmas, is an ordinal.
Common Mistakes
Not matching the gender of the noun.
Tai jau antras diena.Tai jau antra diena.Diena is feminine, so the ordinal is antra.
Leaving the ordinal in the nominative.
Gyvenu trečias aukšte.Gyvenu trečiame aukšte.The ordinal takes the same case as its noun. Aukšte is locative, so the ordinal is trečiame.
Making every part of a compound ordinal an ordinal.
Tai dvidešimtas pirmas amžius.Tai dvidešimt pirmas amžius.Only the last word is an ordinal. The first part stays an ordinary number: dvidešimt.
