Accusative of Time

Level 2

Lithuanian needs no word for on or for here. Put the time word in the accusative: pirmadienį (on Monday), visą dieną (all day).

How It Works

1. When.

  • Days: pirmadienį, antradienį, trečiadienį, ketvirtadienį, penktadienį, šeštadienį, sekmadienį
  • Seasons: pavasarį, vasarą, rudenį, žiemą
  • Parts of the day: rytą (in the morning), dieną (in the daytime), naktį (at night)
  • With a describing word: kitą savaitę (next week), praėjusį mėnesį (last month), šį rytą (this morning)
  • Clock times: trečią valandą (at three o'clock), see telling the time

2. How long. visą dieną (all day), dvi valandas (for two hours), vieną savaitę (for one week), trejus metus (for three years).

3. How often. kiekvieną dieną (every day), and with kas: kas rytą (every morning), see kas with the accusative.

4. Other time cases. The evening is usually said with the locative, vakare (see the locative of time). Repeated times use the plural instrumental, pirmadieniais (on Mondays), and years use šiais metais (see the instrumental of time). Per means within or during: per valandą (within an hour), while valandą alone means for an hour.

5. Not an object. These accusatives stay accusative under negation: Visą naktį nemiegojau (I did not sleep all night).

Examples (6)

  1. Pirmadienį einu į baseiną.

On Monday I'm going to the pool.

Pirmadienis → pirmadienį, with no preposition.

  2. Kitą savaitę važiuosiu į Rygą.

Next week I'm going to Riga.

Both kitą and savaitę are accusative.

  3. Naktį lijo.

    It rained at night.

    Naktis → naktį.

  4. Laukiau tavęs visą dieną.

I waited for you all day.

    Visą dieną tells how long.

  5. Kiekvieną rytą geriu kavą.

    Every morning I drink coffee.

    Kiekvieną rytą tells how often.

  6. Vasarą gyvename kaime.

In summer we live in the countryside.

    Vasara → vasarą.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving the time word in the nominative.

    Pirmadienis turiu pamoką.
    Pirmadienį turiu pamoką.

To say on Monday, use the accusative: pirmadienis → pirmadienį.

  • Forgetting to put the describing word in the accusative.

    Kitas savaitę važiuosiu į Rygą.
    Kitą savaitę važiuosiu į Rygą.

Kitas must match savaitę, so it also takes the accusative: kitą.
