Numbers One to Nine

Level 1

One + singular noun, two to nine + plural noun, with a matching gender: du broliai, dvi seserys, trys knygos.

How It Works

The forms. Masculine / feminine:

  • 1 vienas / viena
  • 2 du / dvi
  • 3 trys (the same nominative form for both)
  • 4 keturi / keturios
  • 5 penki / penkios
  • 6 šeši / šešios
  • 7 septyni / septynios
  • 8 aštuoni / aštuonios
  • 9 devyni / devynios

When you simply count, use the masculine forms: vienas, du, trys, keturi...

With a noun. Choose the gender of the noun. See the two noun genders.

  • one + singular: vienas brolis, viena sesuo
  • two to nine + plural: du broliai, dvi seserys, trys knygos, penkios kavos (see plural nouns)

As an object. The number takes the accusative together with the noun (the accusative direct object). Du and dvi stay the same, trys → tris, and 4–9 end in -is or -ias:

  • Turiu du brolius. Užsakau dvi picas. Perku tris bilietus. Turiu keturias knygas.

Ten has a different pattern. Dešimt never changes and takes the genitive plural: dešimt eurų. See ten and up with the genitive. Nouns that exist only in the plural use special numbers; see numbers for plural-only nouns.

Examples (6)

  1. Turiu du brolius.

    I have two brothers.

Word by Word: Have-I two brothers.

Both the number and the noun are in the accusative after turiu.

  2. Turiu dvi seseris.

    I have two sisters.

Word by Word: Have-I two sisters.

Sesuo is feminine, so two is dvi.

  3. Čia trys knygos.

    Here are three books.

Word by Word: Here three books.

  4. Vieną kavą, prašau.

    One coffee, please.

Word by Word: One coffee, please.

  5. Užsakau dvi picas.

    I am ordering two pizzas.

Word by Word: Order-I two pizzas.

  6. Klasėje keturi studentai ir penkios studentės.

There are four male and five female students in the class.

Word by Word: Class-in four students and five students (female).

Each number matches the gender of its own noun.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the masculine du with a feminine noun.

    du seserys
    dvi seserys

Sesuo is feminine, so two must be dvi.

  • Keeping the noun singular after two to nine.

    trys knyga
    trys knygos

After two to nine, the noun is plural.

  • Giving vienas the wrong gender.

    vienas kava
    viena kava

Kava is feminine, so one is viena.
