Compound Numbers
Look at the last word of the number. Dvidešimt vienas euras (21) is singular, dvidešimt du eurai (22) is plural, and trisdešimt (30) takes the genitive: trisdešimt eurų.
How It Works
1. The three endings.
- Ends in 1 (but not 11): singular. dvidešimt vienas euras (21 euros), dvidešimt viena knyga (21 books).
- Ends in 2-9 (but not 12-19): plural. dvidešimt du eurai (22 euros), trisdešimt penkios knygos (35 books).
- Ends in 0 or 11-19: genitive plural. trisdešimt eurų (30 euros), šimtas dvylika eurų (112 euros).
2. Gender. The last word agrees with the noun: dvidešimt vienas studentas but dvidešimt viena studentė, dvidešimt du eurai but dvidešimt dvi knygos.
3. Tens and hundreds. The tens are dvidešimt, trisdešimt, keturiasdešimt, penkiasdešimt, šešiasdešimt, septyniasdešimt, aštuoniasdešimt, devyniasdešimt. Šimtas (100) and tūkstantis (1,000) are nouns themselves, so they take the genitive: šimtas eurų, du šimtai eurų, tūkstantis eurų.
4. In other cases. Every declinable component changes to fit the sentence. In the examples below, the tens remain unchanged: Tai kainuoja dvidešimt vieną eurą (That costs 21 euros), Bilietas kainuoja trisdešimt penkis eurus (The ticket costs 35 euros). A genitive after a round number stays genitive: Sumokėjau trisdešimt eurų. For numbers in every case, see skaitvardžių linksniavimas.
5. Plural-only nouns. Nouns like metai use the special numbers from dauginiai skaitvardžiai, with the same rule for the last word: Man dvidešimt dveji metai (I am 22).
Examples (6)
- Tai kainuoja dvidešimt vieną eurą.
That costs 21 euros.
The number ends in vienas, so euras stays singular, here in the accusative.
- Klasėje yra dvidešimt dvi mergaitės.
There are 22 girls in the class.
Mergaitė is feminine, so the number is dvi.
- Bilietas kainuoja trisdešimt penkis eurus.
The ticket costs 35 euros.
Ends in 5, so the noun is plural: eurus.
- Mūsų name gyvena trisdešimt žmonių.
Thirty people live in our building.
A round ten takes the genitive plural.
- Knygoje yra šimtas dvylika puslapių.
The book has 112 pages.
Ends in 12, so the noun is genitive plural.
- Man dvidešimt vieneri metai.
I am 21.
Metai is plural-only, so it counts with vieneri.
Common Mistakes
Using the plural after a number ending in one.
dvidešimt vienas euraidvidešimt vienas eurasThe last word is vienas, so the noun is singular.
Using the nominative plural after a round ten.
trisdešimt euraitrisdešimt eurųA number ending in 0 takes the genitive plural.
Using the feminine number with a masculine noun.
