būtu + -is

Would Have

Level 4

Būtu + past participle = "would have" or "had": Ja es būtu zinājis, es būtu atnācis. (If I had known, I would have come.)

How It Works

1. The form. Būtu is the conditional of būt, and it never changes. The participle shows who: es būtu atnācis (a man), es būtu atnākusi (a woman), mēs būtu atnākuši, viņas būtu atnākušas.

2. Unreal "if" in the past. Both the ja part and the result take būtu + participle: Ja tu būtu piezvanījis, mēs būtu tevi sagaidījuši. (If you had called, we would have met you.). Compare the present unreal condition: Ja man būtu laiks, es atnāktu. (If I had time, I would come.). That shorter form usually talks about now; būtu + participle places the situation clearly in the past.

3. Could have, should have.

  • Es būtu varējis palīdzēt. (I could have helped.)
  • Tev būtu vajadzējis man pateikt. (You should have told me.) (see vajadzētu)

For "ought to have", Latvian can also use the debitive: Mums būtu bijis jāpaliek. (see būtu jā-).

4. Regrets. With kaut, it expresses a wish about the past: Kaut es to būtu zinājusi agrāk! (If only I had known that earlier!) (see kaut).

5. Negation. Ne- goes on the auxiliary: Bez tevis es to nebūtu paspējis. (Without you, I would not have made it in time.)

Examples (5)

  1. Ja es būtu zinājis, es būtu atnācis.

If I had known, I would have come.

Both halves use būtu + participle. A woman says zinājusi and atnākusi.

  2. Ja tu būtu piezvanījis, mēs būtu tevi sagaidījuši.

If you had called, we would have met you.

The participle agrees with each subject: tu … piezvanījis, mēs … sagaidījuši.

  3. Bez tevis es to nebūtu paspējis.

Without you, I would not have made it in time.

Negation goes on the auxiliary: nebūtu.

  4. Tev būtu vajadzējis man pateikt.

    You should have told me.

vajadzēt in the past conditional: būtu vajadzējis.

  5. Kaut es to būtu zinājusi agrāk!

If only I had known that earlier!

A wish about the past with kaut, said by a woman.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the simple past in the result part.

Ja es būtu zinājis, es atnācu.
Ja es būtu zinājis, es būtu atnācis.

Atnācu means that you really came. For an imagined result, use būtu + participle.

  • Using a finite past verb instead of the participle after būtu.

Ja es būtu zināju, es būtu atnācis.
Ja es būtu zinājis, es būtu atnācis.

After būtu you need the participle (zinājis), not the past form zināju.

  • Forgetting to make the participle agree with the subject.

Ja viņa būtu zinājis, viņa būtu atnācis.
Ja viņa būtu zinājusi, viņa būtu atnākusi.

For a woman, the participle ends in -usi: zinājusi, atnākusi.
