es gribētu
Polite Wishes: Es Gribētu
To ask politely, use gribētu (would like) instead of gribu, and varētu (could) instead of varat: Es gribētu kafiju, Vai jūs varētu palīdzēt?
How It Works
1. Wishes with gribētu.
- Es gribētu kafiju ar pienu. (I would like a coffee with milk.)
- Es gribētu samaksāt. (I would like to pay.)
- Mēs gribētu rezervēt galdiņu divām personām. (We would like to book a table for two.)
2. Requests with varētu.
- Vai jūs varētu palīdzēt? (Could you help?)
- Vai jūs, lūdzu, varētu runāt lēnāk? (Could you please speak more slowly?)
- Vai es varētu pajautāt? (Could I ask something?)
A negative question sounds even softer: Vai tu nevarētu man palīdzēt? (You couldn't help me, could you?)
3. Offers. Vai jūs gribētu tēju? (Would you like some tea?)
4. Gribu or gribētu? Es gribu kafiju, lūdzu is not rude, but gribētu sounds softer, especially with strangers. A short, common way to order is the dative with lūdzu: Man, lūdzu, kafiju. (A coffee for me, please.)
5. Wanting someone else to act. Add lai and another conditional: Es gribētu, lai tu atnāktu. (I would like you to come.) See wanting someone to do something.

Common Mistakes
Leaving the object in the nominative.
Es gribētu kafija.Es gribētu kafiju.Like gribu, gribētu takes an accusative object: kafija → kafiju.
Using a present-tense verb after varētu.
Vai jūs varētu palīdzat?Vai jūs varētu palīdzēt?After varētu and gribētu, the next verb is an infinitive: palīdzēt.
Using the reflexive form gribētos with es.
Es gribētos kafiju.Es gribētu kafiju.Gribētos comes from gribēties, which takes a dative person: Man gribas ēst (I feel like eating). With es, use gribētu.
