ja + Conditional
Unreal Conditions
For something imagined, use the conditional after ja and in the main clause: Ja man būtu nauda, es nopirktu māju. (If I had money, I would buy a house.)
How It Works
1. Both clauses in the conditional.
- Ja man būtu nauda, es nopirktu māju. (If I had money, I would buy a house.)
- Ja es zinātu viņa numuru, es viņam piezvanītu. (If I knew his number, I would call him.)
The ja clause can come first or second: Ko tu darītu, ja tu laimētu miljonu? (What would you do if you won a million?) Put a comma between the clauses. You can start the main clause with tad: Ja man būtu laiks, tad es atbrauktu.
2. Real or unreal? A possible condition uses the present or future (see ja for real conditions). The conditional shows that you are only imagining:
- Ja rīt būs silts, mēs iesim peldēties. (If it is warm tomorrow, we will go swimming. It may well be.)
- Ja būtu silts, mēs ietu peldēties. (If it were warm, we would go swimming. It is not warm.)
3. Advice without ja. Es tavā vietā (in your place) replaces the "if" clause: Es tavā vietā paliktu mājās. (If I were you, I would stay at home.)
4. The past. The simple conditional also covers the present and future. For something that did not happen in the past, use būtu + participle: Ja es būtu zinājis, es būtu atnācis. (If I had known, I would have come.)
Examples (6)
- Ja man būtu nauda, es nopirktu māju.
If I had money, I would buy a house.
Būtu and nopirktu are both conditional.
- Ja es zinātu viņa numuru, es viņam piezvanītu.
If I knew his number, I would call him.
Zināt → zinātu, piezvanīt → piezvanītu.
- Ja būtu silts, mēs ietu peldēties.
If it were warm, we would go swimming.
Compare the real condition: Ja rīt būs silts, mēs iesim peldēties.
- Ko tu darītu, ja tu laimētu miljonu?
What would you do if you won a million?
The ja clause can also come second.
- Ja tu runātu lēnāk, es tevi saprastu.
If you spoke more slowly, I would understand you.
A polite hint that the other person is speaking too fast.
- Es tavā vietā paliktu mājās.
If I were you, I would stay at home.
Es tavā vietā replaces a whole ja clause.
Common Mistakes
Using the present in the ja clause of an imagined situation.
Ja man ir nauda, es nopirktu māju.Ja man būtu nauda, es nopirktu māju.When the situation is imagined, both clauses take the conditional: ir → būtu.
Using the future in the main clause of an imagined situation.
Ja man būtu nauda, es nopirkšu māju.Ja man būtu nauda, es nopirktu māju.Nopirkšu is the future, used for real plans. For an imagined result, use the conditional nopirktu.
