biju + -is
The Past Perfect
Past of būt + past participle = "had done": Kad es atnācu, viņš jau bija aizgājis. (When I arrived, he had already left.)
How It Works
1. The form. Take the past of būt and add the past active participle:
- es biju aizgājis / aizgājusi (I had left)
- tu biji aizgājis / aizgājusi
- viņš bija aizgājis, viņa bija aizgājusi
- mēs bijām aizgājuši / aizgājušas
- jūs bijāt aizgājuši / aizgājušas
- viņi bija aizgājuši, viņas bija aizgājušas
It works just like the present perfect, with biju in place of esmu.
2. Earlier than another past event. The most common use is to show which of two past events came first: Kad viesi atbrauca, mēs jau bijām paēduši. (When the guests arrived, we had already eaten.). Words like jau (already) and vēl ne (not yet) often appear (see jau and vēl).
3. Up to a point in the past. It also sums up experience before a past moment: Līdz tam es nekad nebiju redzējis jūru. (Until then I had never seen the sea.)
4. Negation. Ne- goes on the auxiliary: nebiju, nebija. Viņš vēl nebija atnācis. (He had not arrived yet.)
5. When the simple past is enough. If the order is already clear, Latvian often just uses the simple past: Viņš aizgāja, un tad es atnācu. The past perfect is for when you want to make clear that one event was already finished.

Common Mistakes
Using a finite past verb instead of the participle.
Viņš jau bija aizgāja.Viņš jau bija aizgājis. After bija you need the participle (aizgājis), not another past form (aizgāja).
Forgetting to make the participle agree with the subject.
Viņa jau bija aizgājis.Viņa jau bija aizgājusi. For a woman, the participle ends in -usi: aizgājusi. For a man it ends in -is: aizgājis.
