Past of būt

Level 2

Būt (to be) has its own past stem: biju, biji, bija, bijām, bijāt, bija. The negative just adds ne-: nebiju, nebija.

How It Works

1. The forms. es biju, tu biji, viņš/viņa bija, mēs bijām, jūs bijāt, viņi/viņas bija.

2. Being somewhere or something.

  • Vakar es biju mājās. (Yesterday I was at home.)
  • Kur tu biji? (Where were you?)
  • Viņš bija skolotājs. (He was a teacher.)

3. Having and there was. Patterns built with ir move into the past with bija:

  • Man bija suns. (I had a dog.) (see man ir)
  • Parkā bija daudz cilvēku. (There were many people in the park.) (see ir for there is)
  • Vakar bija auksti. (It was cold yesterday.)

4. The negative. Nebija keeps the genitive that nav takes for something missing: Man nebija laika (I had no time), Tur nebija neviena (Nobody was there).

5. Looking ahead. Biju also helps build longer tenses, such as the past perfect: Viņš jau bija aizgājis (He had already left). Do not confuse biju (I was) with esmu bijis (I have been), the present perfect.

Examples (6)

  1. Vakar es biju mājās.

    Yesterday I was at home.

    Esmu (I am) → biju (I was).

  2. Kur tu biji?

    Where were you?

Biji is the past form for tu.

  3. Man bija suns.

    I had a dog.

Man ir (I have) becomes man bija in the past.

  4. Tur nebija neviena.

    Nobody was there.

Nebija, like nav, takes the genitive: neviena.

  5. Parkā bija daudz cilvēku.

There were many people in the park.

Bija means there was or there were.

  6. Mēs bijām Siguldā.

    We were in Sigulda.

Bijām has a long ā in the ending.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the present with a past time word.

    Vakar es esmu slims.
    Vakar es biju slims.

Esmu is present. For yesterday, use biju.

  • Using nav in the past.

    Vakar man nav laika.
    Vakar man nebija laika.

Nav is only present. The past negative is nebija, and laika stays in the genitive.

  • Writing bijam without the long ā.

    Mēs bijam Rīgā.
    Mēs bijām Rīgā.

In the past, the mēs form of every verb has a long ā before the m: bijām, gājām, runājām.
